I don't know what the plow was doing last week but he didn't clear the rink. One week later, the rink is not only closed, the hockey boards have already been removed. Where the ice used to be is now slush and snow. Spring is coming!
Here we are, on Pi day, to be greeted by the news that Stephen Hawking has died, forty years later than initially expected. Now he knows some of those things he had assumed were impossible and understands better some of those things he realized were possible.
All souls pass.
Last Sunday was Selection Sunday, which is a pretty big deal around here. By 'around here', I mean in my house. We are a basketball family. Brackets must be filled in and submitted to the Commissioner (Zack self appointed) to go on the wall before tipoff tomorrow.
Let the Games Begin!
I'm just surprised no one lights a torch or anything.
Last night, I briefly played with the idea of filling out a bracket myself. I've never done it. Basketball is an area of life I have avoided as well as I could, considering that over the course of the last 38 years I've seen an average of 22 games a season. When my kids played, I'll bet I attended between 35 and 40 games between November and March. This year, I only made it to three games. It hasn't mattered; no matter how many games I've watched, the rules have escaped me, much less the nuances. I can tell when I'm watching players who know what they're doing but I never get into the weeds and I only care who wins if I'm related to someone on a team.
So I've never filled out a bracket.
Zack offered me one but took it back nearly immediately, saying "If Mom wins, we'll have to give this up, forever."
He's right. The world is chaotic enough without adding the possibility of me with a winning bracket.
This year, Zack gave the contestants nicknames like "the Gambler", "the Rookie", "Rudy, Rudy!" and "the Lord of the Rings". It just adds a sort of World Championship of Poker element to the fun.
The brackets will go up, the games will begin and Zack will keep score each round, as teams are eliminated, upsets occur and madness rules the land.
Why?
Because it's March.
Let Madness Reign!
