It just came and Zack took five minutes to help me set it up. I can already tell that it's ten times faster than the old one, the curser doesn't float all over the page, I can actually write at the site here, rather than writing in Word and cut and pasting here...
Monstrous good gift, kids!!
Mom's Day dawned bright and sunny. Friday had been hot and summery and before we went to bed, I'd stripped off the super warm blanket from our bed. It was still nearly too hot to sleep, even with the wind. Usually in summer, the wind dies when the sun sets but not last Friday. It actually whipped up as the sun set. I made sure our umbrellas were down on the deck and closed most of the windows before I went to bed. Sometime after three a.m., the temps plummeted and it got cold in our room. The wind had drawn a lot of smoke from the wild fires burning in northern Minnesota all the way down to our neighborhood. I awoke in the middle of the night to the smell of burning and a quick glance out our bedroom window showed the park across the street hazy from smoke. I never heard any sirens but assumed something in the neighborhood was on fire. In the morning, Jay told me about the fires.
By Sunday, the haze was much less and the air didn't smell like a barbecue gone bad.
Ty's family joined us for church in the morning. We always sit in the back, in the same place and when they arrived, Babalouie made a bee line for Coach. I love how much that boy adores his grandpa. After mass, Katie met us back at the house (Adam was in WI for the fishing opener; a much more weighty matter than Mother's Day. Fishing opener is a real holiday, not a Hallmark concoction.) and Jay cooked us a lovely brunch. We ate out on the deck. Pancakes, hash browns, scrambled eggs and sausages. The pancakes had blueberries in them, which I love but Babydoll proclaimed to be 'gross'. Heh. More cakes for me, then.
In the late afternoon, Jay and I dressed up and went over to UST for the basketball banquet. When it was originally scheduled, Coach T. was a bit concerned about the overlap but I seriously can't think of a better way to celebrate Mother's Day than to celebrate a National Championship season! Again, that's a real thing, not some corporate sponsored holiday.
It was a terrific banquet!
There was a highlight film, flash drives for everyone with the final four games on it and they all got fitted for their National Champion rings. Jay offered to buy me a matching pendant but I declined. I don't think I'd wear it and I've never been the sort of wife who wears her husbands awards around her neck. It's not that I'm not proud of him, but I'm proud of him, aside from his professional accomplishments.
Yes, he's great. I thought so long before he'd won any of his big ass rings. Now he has enough to leave one to each of his kids. In fifty years, when he's done wearing them himself.
The team members each got plaques, rings and other swag. The seniors each gave a short speech and I was struck by the fact that none of them talked about what a great year it was or what it was like to win the national title. Every single one of them spoke about how much they were going to miss coming to practice everyday and just hanging out together.
I really do believe that the great teams are the ones who realize it isn't about winning. Winning is a by product. Of what, you may ask? When you figure that out, you have a shot at playing for a title.
AS I've said many times before and I'm sure I'll say many times in the future (because I'm a super bore): I don't believe in corporate holidays because every day should be Mother's day, Father's day, Valentines day and Earth day for that matter. But if it's an excuse to buy your mom a great gift she really really needs but is too lazy to buy herself: Good for you!
And I absolutely believe in celebrating accomplishment of lofty goals, such as winning a National title.
Best Mother's Day, ever!
