I think it would be good for all of us to know about the heroes in our midst and the sacrifices they made for us.
Not every hero gets a medal, of course.
But the ones who do shouldn't be ignored.
It gravels my ass that 9 out of 10 high school kids in this country know who Kim Kardashian is but don't know Marcus Luttrell and Mike Murphy(MOH).
They know a comic book character named Steve Rogers as Capt. America but they don't know Col. Bud Day (MOH) whose real life included most of Capt. America's comic book heroics.
Do yourself a favor this memorial day: read a book about any one of the men in our nation's history who was awarded the highest honor our military can bestow. You won't regret it.
My slump of bad books is over. I've just read two in a row that I couldn't put down. The first was Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson. Despite having the same title as a song by the wiggles, it's a horror story featuring voo doo, zombies and one of the most dysfunctional families I've ever read about. It's very well written and I read the whole book in under 24 hours. I plan to read more of Hopkinson's books.
Now I'm halfway through a novel on the life of St. Catherine of Siena, entitled Lay Siege to Heaven, by Louis deWohl. Written in 1960, this book could have been written today, given the problems the Catholic church is currently dealing with regarding the evil behavior of too many of it's priests. But the story isn't about bad priests, its about a wonderful nun. It's a well told tale about historic events that are too unbelievable to be fiction. This is the story of a Saint whose boundless joy in the good news and enthusiasm for the love of Christ infected nearly all who met her. We're not talking about some mopey, boring, goody two shoes girl who was never any fun here: Catherine drew souls to Jesus with the power of happiness.
Wow. Who'da thunk that would work?
Jay and I have already had a wonderful Holiday weekend. We had dinner parties to attend on Saturday and Sunday. Both parties consisted of small groups of friends, delicious food, hilarious stories and good times.
The weather has been quintessential spring time: hot, sunny, clouds, some rain and then the sun comes back and its hot again. The grass and flowers are growing like mad and the air smells so good I just want to sit here and breathe all day.
