I need to write this stuff down before I forget it all. A week ago Sunday, Jay was finally feeling good after weeks of suffering with a chest cold. He was missing his grandkids so after Mass we went up to Katie’s house. We picked up the fixin’s for brunch and had a lovely couple of hours with the girls. Later, we went down to Ty’s house for dinner.
As always, the kids were delightful. The day before, Ty and Megan had errands to run and they were each going to take one of the kids with them. Babalouie was supposed to go to Target with his dad but he wanted to go with his mom. Ty couldn’t tell him that they were going to Target in part to buy a birthday present for his sister so he tried to talk Babalouie into coming with him. He managed to talk the kid into giving him a fair shot.
“Eenie, meenie, miney mo, I, choose, Mom.”
The kid knows his own mind.
The weather remained freakishly warm. We had windows open in the house and one very ambitious afternoon, Katie and I gave the babies a bath and took them for a walk. The forecast was for a major blizzard later in the week so we wanted to take full advantage of April in February. The girls loved the walk. As long as that stroller kept moving, they were happy as two clams.
The Tommies finished the regular season in first place which earned them home court advantage. On Thursday night, they played St. John’s, their arch nemesis. Tyler, Zack and I went together. The gym was not as packed as it usually is when these two teams meet: I suppose the expected blizzard kept people off the road. The game was a nail biter: the Tommies took an early lead but the Johnnies fought back. In the second half the Johnnies were up by as much as ten but in the end it was neck and neck, tooth and claw and the winning point was scored as time ran out…by the Johnnies.
Blurg.
It sucks to lose but it really sucks to lose to your arch rival.
And the predicted blizzard never showed up. I’m disappointed. While 20” would have been a bit of a mess, four or five would have been fun and beautiful. The week of warm weather left everything bare, brown and boring.
Friday, Josie came into town! She and her friend, who gave her a ride, actually came in Thursday night to beat the snow. Friday morning, I went to pick her up from her friend’s house. I had to drive a few miles south and I ran into the blizzard that never made it to town. The girls were meeting me at a Walmart and I almost missed it there was so much snow in the air. But I pulled into the parking lot and texted Josie that I was there. She texted back that they were checking out and I told her where I was parked. Turns out in the whole packed Walmart parking lot, I had parked right next to the car Josie arrived in!
Ten minutes later we had driven out from under the blizzard and were back in brown land. It was even sunny later on. We spent the afternoon at Katie’s, playing with the babies, who were twice as big as the last time Josie saw them, a month ago.
Saturday, everyone was coming to our house for dinner. Josie wanted the whole gang together for a night. We decided on gumbo for dinner and I had to make kiss cookies for dessert: when I brought chocolate chip cookies to her house last weekend, Babydoll asked me to do kiss cookies next time. I promised, so I made the cookies in the morning while the gumbo simmered.
In the afternoon, Katie, Meg, MJ and her kids all came over to hang with the babies for a little while. They hadn’t seen BoopityBoop since Bean’s birthday, a month ago. Tot got very excited when he laid eyes on the babies. Nanners and Bean had to have their turns holding the girls, too. Later on, Babydoll and Babalouie and the girls had some fun together. The gumbo was delicious, as always.
Sunday, Jay threw several racks of ribs on his new smoker. OMG, I think that smoker is my favorite thing. The ribs were so good I could hardly believe it.
We went to the early Mass then Josie went out for brunch with friends and Jay cooked me breakfast, while also smoking those ribs. I’m married to a fantastic cook. I got several orders painted before I had to take a break and drive Josie back to her friend’s house for a ride back to school. There and back took nearly an hour and a half but there’s never any traffic on a Sunday and we never did get any snow. Even the snow that fell on Friday was gone by Sunday. I got a lot more work done after I returned home and then the ribs were done and dinner was delicious.
I did not watch the Oscars so didn’t hear about the mix up at the end of the night. I don’t think it’s fair to blame Warren Beatty for what happened: the guy was just supposed to read a card, it’s not his fault they handed him the wrong card. And it’s an unprecedented event so it’s not fair to think he should have figured out what was going on. And he’s like, a million years old.
I do feel bad for the producers of the movie that actually won the Oscar. Everyone in that profession dreams of the moment they hear their name called after “…and the Oscar goes to…” and they didn’t get to have that moment. It may never happen again for them and someone wrecked it when it did happen.
Fancy problems.
Then, this morning, we got news that the Tommies had gotten into the tournament. Our season isn’t over after all!
The Madness continues.
