Katie and Adam went to a concert last night. They met Ty and Megan for dinner downtown before the show so they planned to be out for several hours. No problem! I’ve been around the girls enough to know how they work, what they like and how long between exciting episodes.
I got this.
I fed the girls at 6:30 and 7:00. Their schedules are such that they usually wake up hungry a half an hour to an hour apart; perfect! I put them in clean diapers and cheetah spotted pajamas. I put them in the double boppie and we had a photo shoot. We played for a while and when they began to show signs of sleepiness, I wrapped them in their night time swaddles, put them in their bassinets, made myself some dinner and watched season 5 of the Mindy Project.
Easy peasy!
All was quiet for nearly two hours. Long enough to lull me into complacency.
At ten o’clock they simultaneously woke up, starving. Starving! They sprang awake, howling, as though they planned it.
Now, lately they’ve been going four to five hours between meals so I had expected them to last until at least 11. I certainly wasn’t expecting them to demand dinner at the exact same time. Katie had prepared bottles for both of them before she left so at least I didn’t have to spend any time on that; I was able to warm them up immediately. That was not remotely fast enough.
Assuring them that their dinners were on the way did nothing to appease the tiny pair of banshees my delightful girls had turned into. The screaming (was it them or me?) lasted about five minutes until I got them both in the boppie and bottles into their mouths. They chugged their second dinner like they hadn’t eaten all day.
Two babies, two bottles, two hands…it all worked beautifully until Boop needed to burp. Boopity was not pleased that she had to wait while Nana used both hands to burp Boop. Nor was Boop pleased when it was Boopity’s turn to burp. I was basically juggling babies as they took turns screaming at me. At one point, I had one baby on my shoulder and the other laid on her tummy across my legs as I patted both backs and they burped up a storm in preparation for downing the last few ml of their dinner.
For a brief moment, I couldn’t tell them apart. I didn’t want to mix them up and give each of them the remainder of her sister’s bottle so I laid them on the floor to compare them. Side by side, it’s still easy to tell them apart but they’re getting more and more identical every day. Boop is gaining on her sister by the minute.
After bottles came new diapers and then lots and lots of cuddling before swaddling and they went back to sleep. The excitement lasted a little over an hour.
They were sleeping like angels when their parents got home.
I slept like an angel after that, too.
I'm going back up to baby sit tonight. I can't wait!
