BoopityBoop are two months old today. They had a check up this morning and I went along to help. It was easier for me to spend the night than to drive up in time to help get the girls ready so I did. I took the first night shift so Katie could get some sleep. I fed the girls at midnight. They seem to think that’s the perfect time to be wide awake, alert and ready to party. I had fun with them but I know that can be very wearing on a person night after night. With any luck, this phase won’t last very long and they’ll get their days and nights right.
At their appointment, we were told what we already knew: our girls are practically perfect in every way.
They’ve each gained 4lbs. This means that Boop has actually doubled her birth weight. Boopity is still 13oz heavier than her sister. Katie’s cousin Ellie had a baby girl yesterday. GM weighs 8lbs 3oz, which is heavier than Boop but not as big as Boopity.
Our girls had to have some shots today. Three each. Two nurses came into the exam room with little trays covered with syringes. “Which of them is braver?” they asked. That may seem like a silly question to ask of such tiny babies but Katie had already told me that Boop would cry but get over it as soon as the pain was gone. Boopity, on the other hand would remain angry for quite awhile for letting her be hurt.
Boop got her shots first. She screamed and cried but just as her Mom predicted, she stopped crying as soon as it was over. Then Katie took her and comforted her. Boop didn’t cry any more but she pushed her lower lip out and looked like she was trying so hard to be brave.
At that point, Boopity got her first shot. She screamed once and then was silent. I peeked around the nurse to see what was happening. Boopity was bright red and shaking, her mouth wide open, taking the deepest, longest breath I’ve ever seen a baby take. Ten seconds of outraged silence, then she let out the loudest, angriest cry a child not quite 9lbs has ever squeezed out of her lungs.
Everyone cried.
But then it was over, they’d been vaccinated and we got them dressed, wrapped up and took them home. There, they got a little Tylenol, a lot of snuggles and lunch before falling into an exhausted sleep.
I had to leave after lunch to take care of my own business. I’ve got a lot of special orders and shop inventory to fill, which is terrific. I like having lots to choose from.
I didn’t make it all the way home until nearly 3. Zack got home before I’d even gotten my boots off. I took out eggs and butter to make a Fat Tuesday batch of cookies. Much to my surprise, Jay came home! I was surprised, since the team had practice at four. Half of the players had the flu over the weekend but most of them are healthy again and ready for the next round. Jay wasn’t feeling great and had been sent home, so as not to make anyone else sick. He went to bed.
I got him some chicken noodle soup and finally got around to making my cookies at about four.
I ate a dozen of them. They were great.
It wasn’t a long Fat Tuesday but it was a good one.
Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and I’m ready for Lent.
