Last year my computer went belly up. Its internal internet connection capabilities died so for a month or so I used an external thingy that enabled me to get online. Then I came into some unexpected money and I bought a new computer.
I HATE IT.
In all fairness, I’m not at all sure it’s the computer I hate. We also switched internet providers at roughly the same time that I got my new laptop. It’s possible that it’s our new internet provider that I HATE.
The problem is not simply that its slow, although it is now much slower than I remember the dial up we used back in the nineties (again, in fairness I acknowledge that it may not be that slow, just slower than what I had become accustomed to). The real problem is not that it takes forever for a page to load but that ‘ explorer has encountered a problem that caused the program to close’ every few minutes!
There are three websites I like to read every morning. Powerline, Steynonline and Townhall. I can get what I need in well under an hour.
Lately it’s been taking me all morning. If I had these pages printed in front of me, I could read them all in forty minutes but I spend hours waiting for pages to load and then waiting some more while my browser pulls its thumb out of its ass and tries to pick up the pages it dropped.
I also like to comment but that's become a problem; only half the letters I type appear in the comment box onscreen. It can take me five minutes to write "How stupid is this?" And if I want to post a column on FB, the window doesn't open large enough for the 'share' button to appear. I don't know who or what to blame for any of this; I just know it SUCKS.
I know, I know; I could stop wasting time trying to comment but I WON'T LET THE MAN SHUT ME UP!!
This morning, for instance, I spent nearly three hours trying to read the equivalent of ten pages of text. This is insane.
I’m self employed. My office is at home. I should have been at work two hours ago but I just finished reading the news.
Today, not only was my internet slower than slow, my screen froze up and wouldn’t let me page down, turn the page or exit…TWICE.
I don’t have time for this. No one has time for this.
So if you’re wondering why I’ve had nothing to say while the world turned inside out during the last few weeks, it’s just that by the time I’ve been able to read about current events, I’m so effin’ sick of being on line that I’m ready to throw this machine out the window and I have no time at all to post anything.
I have to get to work now.
I can paint a tree top angel in half the time it would take me to read Krauthammer’s column.
