Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we were able to treat ourselves to back ground music of all '80s hits. While reading our books, eating guacamole and drinking gin an tonics, we reminisced about our own lives during that glittery, colorful era.
The '80s encompassed my twenties, when we were busy raising babies and establishing our careers while living in Jamestown, North Dakota (long before Nodak's economic boom) and Havre, Montana. For me, that was a decade packed with fun, adventure and opportunities that we enjoyed but were much too young to fully appreciate. Isn't that what they mean when they say 'youth is wasted on the young'?
We may not have been able to appreciate it at the time (who ever does?) but we didn't waste the 80s. We loved our time in the Big Sky and we came home from it with Tyler, Katie and Zack. I dare anyone to do better!
The guys came home from golf and joined us on the boat. We toured the lake, then returned to the cabin for yet another spectacular dinner of grilled steaks, corn on the cob, summer salad and french bread. I was so stuffed I didn't bother with dessert and we had a whole menu of yummy desserts, too.
After dinner, we enjoyed the brand new smart TV and high speed internet that J had spent the previous day setting up and we streamed Return to Me, on my recommendation. I think everyone enjoyed it as much as I do. Then we caught Top Gun on cable. I haven't seen that movie in decades.
Two things struck me about that movie; was the most frequent direction "Play it gayer! I need more homoeroticism!"?
And when Kelly McGillis explains to Maverick (all the pilots refer to themselves by their call signs. Good God.) that she had to come down hard on him in class, so everyone wouldn't realize that she had fallen for him; lines delivered as though she were giving the Gettysburg address, I couldn't help but yelling "Why doesn't Hollywood make movies like this anymore?!!"
Man, the 80s really did rock.
