My parents now have 6 grandkids who are state champions, in four different sports and two or three more who made it all the way to the championship game before being defeated.
Not too shabby.
I was not at the Championship baseball game because Jay and I were invited up to Loon Sh*t bay for the weekend with our good friends, the Cs.
We hit the road early Thursday morning and headed up to San Francisco of the Midwest, also known as Duluth, for lunch with another couple we love to see.
It was a crystal blue morning when we left town. That weather didn't last and the baseball game was actually postponed a few hours for a thunderstorm. Up in Duluth, the skies were as blue and clear as a you could wish. We met our friends for lunch and had a wonderful time. I love Duluth. It's a pretty, fun, harbor town and if it weren't for the frigid winters, it would be a tourist destination for the entire world. Thank God for winter!
Our buddy, whose cabin we were spending the night at, was not going to arrive there until evening so we had a couple of hours to kill in Duluth. We went on down to the lake and took a walk. We started at the Leif Erikson garden and walked to the Marina. Grandma's Marathon is being run this coming weekend and preparations were evident all over down town. The gardens were gorgeous, as the tulips, lilacs, iris and apple trees are all in bloom right now. There was a slight breeze coming off the lake and it smelled of lilacs.
The color of Superior is strange; the water reflected the blue of the sky but the undersides of the waves were copper colored. It was very beautiful. We saw no boats except for one sight seeing ferry.
If I had all the money in the world, I'd love a place on the bluffs, high above the harbor. It's no wonder that the millionaire shipping magnates of the last century built their mansions on the bluffs above Duluth. I wouldn't want to live there year round, but a few weeks in summer, to escape the oppressive heat of the rest of the country would be nice and a week in the dead of winter to remind me what real cold is would not be unwelcome, either. I think it would be great to be able to watch snow fall on the big lake while warm and toasty behind my picture window.
We met Ed in Grand Rapids and headed into the Great Chippewa Forest and the Cabin on Loon Sh*t Bay.
I plan on spending the next few days doing absolutely nothing but reading my book.
Happy summer!
