Jay and I went back to our old parish for Mass this last Sunday. It’s always fun to drop in back there, we always run into people we’ve known since we were little kids. We went there because we were late for Mass at the church we’ve been going to for the last 11 years. We arrived in time for the 10:30 Mass only to find it had been changed to 9:30.
Back in September.
I don’t know how I feel about a parish that would conspire to trick someone into thinking they’ve lost their mind. I’m pretty sure I’ve been to the 10:30 Mass plenty of times in the last four months.
Anyway. Not only did we get to see Andy and a bunch of his kids but right before the service started, Zack showed up and slid into the seat next to me. He really likes the priest at this church.
After Mass, we headed to Bunny’s, one of our favorite spots for brunch. The place was packed but we got a table in the big back room. I have a couple of go-to brunch meals that I like. Usually, if eggs benedict are offered, they’re my thing but this time I was in the mood for waffles. Zack got the eggs bennie. Jay got biscuits and gravy and we were all happy.
I spent the afternoon up in my office, filling orders, listening to the cheers and hollers coming from the TV room. I knew the Vikings were doing okay by the timber of the noise drifting up the stairs.
Late in the day, I took a break and went downstairs. I glanced into the TV room, which is adjacent to the kitchen. The men were quiet in their seats. Jay caught my eye and shook his head. I walked in and looked at the score. Vikings down by one with 14 seconds left on the clock.
“We lost.” Jay said quietly.
I turned and left the room.
I hadn’t gone four steps before Zack and Jay had leaped from their chairs, screaming. I whirled around to see them jubilantly chest bumping each other.
I came back in to watch the replay of that amazing pass, catch and run.
I did not see the ghost of Prince, but there has to be some explanation for why the defender just curled up and dropped.
Dinner was extra good that night.
I promise NOT to watch the game today, either.
